Univen’s Senior Management team bids farewell to Dr Zaaiman
The University of Venda Senior Managers bid farewell to the Deputy Vice Chancellor Operations, Dr Jannie Zaaiman. The Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Peter Mbati commended Dr Zaaiman for the excellent leadership he provided in the Operations Division where he was charged with the responsibilities of overseeing ICT, Facilities Management, Human Resources, Finance, Safety and Security including UIGC. The event was held at the University Council Chambers on Monday, 24 October 2016.
“Having worked with Dr Zaaiman for the past eight years, I can say that he has been an important partner in the development of Univen”, said Prof Mbati. Dr Zaaiman was described as a dependable colleague with tons of purposeful progressive energy towards the university business. “I am really sad to leave Univen at the end of this month. When I was interviewed in 2008 I never even remotely thought that I would be successful in my application and I would also never have realized how connected I would be to such a warm community of people”, these are the words said by Dr Zaaiman in his response. He thanked the Senior Management Committee members for the wonderful working relationships as well as friendships that have been developed over the past years they have worked together and known each other. Dr Zaaiman said “working here at Univen each day has made me a more complete and well-rounded person”. He mentioned the tough journey that Univen walked and today is standing proud as a monument to all South Africans that a rural University can become a success story. He encouraged team work and unity amongst the employees including members of senior management. As he concluded Dr Zaaiman said “my wish for everyone here is that you all continue to experience success, to feel fulfilled in all you do, and to have nothing but pleasant results with each completed Univen project”
Thohoyandou – On Friday, 26 August 2016, the University of Venda awarded 706 Short course certificates to students who completed their programmes in different fields with the University recently. The graduation which was organised within Univen Innovative Growth Company (UIGC) took place in the University Auditorium. The certificates were awarded in areas of Catering and Food Preparation; Geographical Information Systems (GIS); End -User Computing Level 3; South African Sign Language; Braille, Curriculum Development and Methodology; Farm Equipment Level 1; Financial Management Level 2; Farm Equipment Level 2; Animal Production Level 1; Plant production Level 1; Animal Production Level 2, Plant Production Level 2; Plumbing Level 4.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, Prof Jan Crafford when welcoming the guests, appreciated the ETDP, LGSETA and other sponsors for their continuous support to develop South Africa with skills and commended Univen for offering career-focused short course certification as part of a comprehensive university mandate. “We are very proud of the excellent relations we enjoy with our SETA partners in the Province and we hope that our partnership will grow from strength to strength. The University of Venda is locally relevant and globally competitive in terms of our research outputs and the quality of our graduates”, said Prof Crafford.
Prof Crafford indicated that the certificates which were awarded will allow students to fill gaps in their knowledge and gain particular skills that may be needed for work or promotion. The short courses today are regarded important to bridge the gap between formal education and meaningful employment.
The ETDP SETA Provincial Manager, Mr Isaiah Mphaphuli when delivering his message of support highlighted to the audience that the handing over of certificates ceremony is very special since it took place in August which is women’s month which is a significant month for the South African women and the greater South African society. This has been confirmed by the large number of women who graduated during the ceremony.
Mr Mphaphuli confirmed their continued commitment in quality training programmes that are aimed at empowering South Africans with appropriate skills that would make them more employable or be entrepreneurs and therefore create jobs, hence directly contributing to economic growth and development of our communities. “We congratulate and challenge you to make use of the knowledge and skills you have acquired towards the betterment of our society”, Mphaphuli said.

The Director of Limpopo Department of Education, Mr MD Mabote talked about inclusive education which is both an education and curriculum phenomenon which is globally and constitutionally acknowledged. Mr Mabote said that Limpopo’s Department of Education is profusely delighted about the existing collision and collaboration amongst itself as an educational institution, EDTP-SETA and the University of Venda in making education, teaching and learning of our learners accessible and possible. He uploaded and commended both Univen and EDTP-SETA for the good work that they are doing towards teacher empowerment which will ultimately benefit learners, communities and the society in general. “We hope that it is not just about certification but it is about the acquisition and application of relevant appropriate braille skills and South African sign language skills that will bring a critical change in the quality of education and support to the learners with special educational needs.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor Operations, Dr Jannie Zaaiman proposed a vote of thanks. He thanked and appreciated the newly installed Mayor of Thulamela, His Worship Cllr AS Tshifhango who was amongst the guests.
